Clinical Maxillofacial Prosthetics
Clinical Dental Technicians
At the meeting of the Dental Technicians Board on 4th November 2005 it was determined that the design, manufacture,
fitting and repair of extra-oral maxillofacial prostheses, under the prescription of a registered dentist, dental
specialist or medical specialist is part of the "areas of advanced practice" in the Scope of Practice for Clinical
Dental Technicians. Areas of clinical dental technology practice which were not included in a practitioner's training
should not be undertaken unless the practitioner has completed appropriate training and practises to the standards
required by the relevant Code of Practice.
This means that Clinical Dental Technicians can do maxillofacial prosthetic work provided they can demonstrate that
they are competent and experienced in this area. For Clinical Dental Technicians who are not currently competent in
this area this would require working as part of a dental team, building on their practical experience and undertaking
relevant training and courses. A formal pre-requisite training course is not required at this time.
For further information please refer to the Dental Council policy on advanced areas of
practice.
Dental Technicians
Dental Technicians intending to work in the maxillofacial prosthetics area in the future must first be
registered as a Clinical Dental Technician or have completed a DCNZ accredited course of training for
registration. The University of Otago offers as part of the Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Technology a paper titled
"Advanced Maxillofacial Prosthodontic Techniques" which it will soon be submitted for accreditation by the Dental
Council of New Zealand as an accredited course of training for registration.
