Applying for Registration as a Dental Hygienist
For holders of prescribed dental hygiene qualifications
New Zealand qualified applicants
If you hold a prescribed qualification (other than the Dental Council's New Zealand Dental
Hygiene Registration Examination (NZDHREX)), that has been completed in New Zealand AND you are applying for registration after 31 March in the
year following your graduation please contact the Dental Council Secretariat on (04) 499 4820 or by email at inquiries@dcnz.org.nz for the required registration form. Please note that, you will be required to
provide three professional references (using Form R001) from referees who are able to
comment on your clinical abilities.
Holders of overseas prescribed qualifications
If you hold a prescribed qualification that has been completed outside of New Zealand you
need to firstly apply for eligibility to register. To do so you need to complete Form ELIG005
and send this application with the required fees and documentation to the Dental Council. In addition you are required to provide three
professional references (using Form R001) from referees who are able to comment on your
clinical skills and a completed Dental Hygiene Self Assessment form. Overseas-trained
practitioners are also required to read the New Zealand Conditions of Practice Resource Book, and attest that
they have done so.
The Dental Council will consider your application on an individual basis. If the Council is satisfied that you are eligible to apply for
registration you will be issued with an eligibility letter, stating that you are eligible to apply for registration. To apply for registration
you are required to complete Form REG002, which will be sent to you by the Secretariat with your eligibility letter.
The correct fees must accompany your applications. Please refer to the fees schedule for the current fees.
