Undertaking supervised orthodontic assisting duties whilst completing a prescribed training programme

Under the provisions of the Act, unregistered persons are permitted to practise orthodontic auxiliary duties (as set out in the scope of orthodontic auxiliary practice) only if they are engaged in a course of training or instruction which has been prescribed for registration purposes. This means that prospective orthodontic auxiliary applicants can undertake supervised orthodontic auxiliary duties whilst completing a prescribed training programme, prior to applying for registration as an orthodontic auxiliary.

The supervised orthodontic auxiliary duties must overseen by a registered dentist or dental specialist who holds a current Annual Practising Certificate. The supervising dentist/dental specialist must:
  • be onsite at all times to advise, guide, monitor, participate or intervene in all procedures undertaken by the applicant; and
  • ensure that patients are aware that the person providing the orthodontic auxiliary care is under training and ensure the patient consents to this. Please refer to form OA002 - Consent for aspects of orthodontic care to be provided by a trainee under supervision.
In the event the supervising dentist or dental specialist has concerns about an applicant's competence to practise orthodontic auxiliary duties at any time before or during the supervision, the supervisor must inform the Council and also take action in relation to the supervisee's continued training.

Applicants seeking approval to undertake supervised orthodontic auxiliary duties whilst undertaking a prescribed qualification must:
  • complete and submit form OA001 to the Dental Council, along with the accompanying documentation and application fee.
Applicants must not engage in clinical orthodontic auxiliary procedures until the Council has advised that the applicant may proceed to practise orthodontic auxiliary duties while engaged in the prescribed training course.

The Council's decision will normally be advised within one week of applicants submitting a complete application.

Registration

Upon completion of a prescribed orthodontic auxiliary programme applicants are invited to apply to the Dental Council for registration. To do so, please complete REG001 and return this completed application together with the necessary documentation and fees to the Dental Council.
