The New Zealand Dentist Registration Examinations

Overseas-qualified practitioners without prescribed dental qualifications normally need to sit and pass the New Zealand Dental Registration Examinations (NZDREX) (a pass in which is a prescribed qualification for registration).

Applicants with non-prescribed qualifications are encouraged to sit the registration examinations before making an application for registration. However, Council will consider, on an individual basis, applications for registration if special circumstances exist in respect of qualifications, training or experience.

The New Zealand Dentist Registration Examinations (NZDREX) comprise an Overseas Trained Dentist Preliminary (OTDP) Examination and a Clinical Examination:

The OTDP Examination tests your knowledge and understanding of the scientific bases of oral health care and your ability to apply that knowledge in the general area of pre-clinical health sciences (medical and oral). Full details of the examination can be read in the OTDP Candidate Information Handbook.

The Clinical Examination determines whether you can plan, manage, deliver and evaluate oral healthcare for individuals and communities. The Candidate Handbook for the Clinical Examination contains full information related to this examination.
