Follow-up Consultation on Proposed Changes to the Dental Technician and Clinical Dental Technician Scopes
of Practice and Code of Practice

The Dental Council has issued a follow-up consultation document on
the Proposed Changes to the Dental Technician and Clinical Dental Technician Scopes of Practice and Code of Practice.
After the acceptance of the proposed scopes and code of practice changes from the May 2011 consultation and subsequent investigations
on matters raised by stakeholders in their submissions, Council is issuing a follow-up consultation document with additional proposed
changes to the scopes and code of practice. The majority of proposed changes deal with clarifying definitions, updating terminology
and alignment between the scopes and code of practice.
The Council seeks comments on the consultation document by 30 May 2012.

future of the specialty of Oral Surgery in New Zealand.
The Council seeks comments on the consultation document by 23 April 2012. Submissions can be sent to

Consultation on the 2012/13 Budgets and Annual Practising Certificate Fees and Disciplinary Levies for Dental Therapists,
Dental Hygienists, Orthodontic Auxiliaries, Dental Technicians and Clinical Dental Technicians
20 December, 2011; Outcome: February 2012
The Council issued a consultation document on the proposed
2012/13 budgets and the annual practising certificate fees and disciplinary levies for all practitioner groups excluding dentists.
The Council sought comments by 10 February 2012.
Council approved the 2012/13 budget, as reflected in the consultation document, at its February 2012 meeting. The new fees for 2012/13
were also approved, including: APC fees and disciplinary levies for dental therapists, dental hygienists, orthodontic auxiliaries,
dental technicians and clinical dental technicians; increased examination and registration fees; and an additional processing APC fee.
The 2012/13 dentist APC fee and disciplinary levy will be calculated, and consulted on, after the close of the financial year on 31
March 2012.

Consultation on the proposed prescribed qualification for the Dental Specialty: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Scope of Practice

The Dental Council issued a consultation document
on a proposed prescribed qualification for the Dental Specialty: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Scope of Practice, and the consultation closed
on 11 November 2011.
The Dental Council, at its meeting on 6 March 2012, approved that the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons
(Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) be gazetted as a prescribed qualification for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Scope of Practice.
The Council has, by notice to be published in the Gazette on 15 March 2012, described the revised prescribed qualifications for the
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Scope of Practice.

Consultation on the Changes to the Orthodontic Auxiliary Prescribed Qualifications

The Dental Council issued a consultation
document on proposed changes to the Orthodontic Auxiliary Prescribed Qualifications, which closed on 4 November 2011.
The Dental Council, at its meeting on 5 December 2011, approved the proposals contained in the consultation document. The Council
has, by notice to be published in the Gazette on 22 December 2011, described the revised orthodontic auxiliary prescribed qualifications.

Consultation on Proposed Changes to the Dental Hygiene Scope of Practice - relating to orthodontic procedures
27 May, 2011; Follow-up 9 September, 2011; Outcome: 20 December, 2011 & 13 March, 2012
The Dental Council issued a consultation document on
Proposed Changes to the Dental Hygiene Scope of Practice - relating to orthodontic procedures. The Council sought comments on the proposal
by 22 July 2011. Council considered all submissions at its meeting on Monday 8 August 2011.
A follow-up consultation document on additional changes
to the Dental Hygiene Scope of Practice relating to orthodontic procedures was issued on 9 September 2011 with comments sought by 4
November 2011.
The Dental Council, at its meeting on 5 December 2011, approved the proposals contained in the follow-up consultation document. The Council
has, by notice published in the Gazette on 22 December 2011, described the revised dental hygiene scope of practice.

The consequential changes to the dental hygiene scope of practice were reflected in the working relationship document between dental
hygienists and dentists/dental specialists, and the amended working relationship was issued to practitioners in a
letter dated 13 March 2012.

Consultation on the proposed Scope of Adult Care in Dental Therapy
21 March, 2011; Outcome: 1 September, 2011
The Dental Council issued a consultation document,
dated 21 March 2011, on a proposal for the existing scope of Adult Care in Dental Therapy practice to be amended to allow practitioners
to practise under either direct clinical supervision or clinical guidance, depending on the practitioner's qualifications.
The Council sought comments on the proposal by 16 May 2011.
The Dental Council, at its meeting on 8 August 2011, approved the notice of the Adult Care in Dental Therapy Scope of Practice
as proposed in the consultation document issued 21 March 2011. For the details of the outcome of the consultation read the consultation outcome letter.

Consultation on Proposed Changes to the Dentist Annual Practising Certificate (APC) fee and disciplinary levy to
be effective from 1 October 2011
7 June, 2011; Outcome: 8 August, 2011
The Dental Council issued a consultation document on the
proposed changes to the Dentist APC fee and disciplinary levy for the APC cycle 1 October 2011 to 30 September 2012. The Council sought
comments on the proposal by 2 August 2011. Council considered all submissions at its meeting on Monday 8 August 2011.
The Dentist Annual Practising Certificate (APC) fee and disciplinary levy have been approved by Council, at its 8 August 2011 meeting.

The Dental Council issued a consultation document on the
Proposed Changes to the Dental Technician and Clinical Dental Technician Scopes of Practice, Code of Practice and Emergency Training
Levels. The Council sought comments on the proposal by 22 July 2011. Council considered all submissions at its meeting on Monday 8
August 2011.
Council resolved to obtain expert clinical opinions in the particular field of taking impression of maxillofacial defects. These were
considered at the Council's March 2012 meeting, and the follow-up consultation document will be issued soon.

Consultation on a Proposed Code of Practice on Advertising
13 April, 2011; Feedback: 7 October, 2011
The Dental Council issued a consultation
document on a Proposed Code of Practice on Advertising. The Council sought comments on the proposal by 20 June 2011.
Council issued a feedback letter on
the proposed Code of Practice on Advertising consultation on 7 October 2011.
A follow-up consultation document with an amended Draft Code of Practice on Advertising will be issued soon.

Hygiene, Therapy & Orthodontic Auxiliary Scope Change
20 March, 2011; 2011 Outcome: 28 February 2011
The Dental Council issued a consultation
document on the proposed changes to the Dental Hygiene, Orthodontic Auxiliaries and Dental Therapy Scopes of Practice.
This consultation closed on 12 December 2010.
The Dental Council, at its meeting on 28 February 2011, approved the merge of the relevant add-on scopes of practice into the relevant
general scope of practice for Dental Hygienists, Orthodontic Auxiliaries and Dental Therapists, as proposed in the consultation document
